Recentering Democracy: Shifting from Compromise and Winning to  Conversation and Possibilities

Public School Boards Association Professional Development Meeting

Edmonton April 10,2025

As Trustees, democracy is at the heart of our work. It thrives on participation, dialogue, and collective decision-making—grounded in the understanding that diverse voices shape a just and equitable society. Yet, democracy’s greatest strength—honoring and including all perspectives—is also its greatest challenge. Today, it is increasingly undermined by populism, polarization, misinformation, and the politics of "othering," which fuel division and fear rather than fostering thoughtful debate and collaboration. Too often, democracy is reduced to a battle of political ideologies, where winning at all costs or settling for surface-level agreements takes precedence over genuine engagement and a meaningful decision making process.

Reclaiming democracy’s potential requires shifting from rigid ideological clashes to meaningful conversation—centering integrity, curiosity, and collaborative solutions. This work is not easy; democracy is inherently messy. But as Trustees, we have a responsibility to strengthen conversations, deepen understanding, and listen with intention rather than assume or distort each other’s words. By prioritizing how we engage with one another over rigid outcomes, we move beyond division into possibility—where clarity, connection, and a stronger democratic process can emerge.

Keeping Your Cool: Conflict Skills for Board Members

Calgary Board Leadership Conference

Calgary May 24, 2025

Board members often enjoy their roles—until conflict arises. Disagreements with fellow board members, staff, community members, or clients can quickly shift the tone and dynamic of the board.

In these times of conflict, what do we need to understand about ourselves? How can we communicate effectively with others and use conflict as an opportunity to strengthen our ourselves and our boards rather than leaving them?

In this session, we will explore techniques to deepen self-awareness, strengthen clarity and confidence, and cultivate the ability to navigate conflict with intention. These skills will empower you to make informed decisions and engage more effectively, even in challenging situations.
